Each cache in the Song Meaning Series briefly describes the meaning of a popular song. Inside each container there is a number written, usually on the logbook - you may want to record each number in case there is one day a final bonus cache.
Many people do not realise this fact, but the song Jet Airliner popularised by Steve Miller Band in the late '70s was in fact a cover of a song written by a little known blind blues singer from Cape Cod, named Paul Pena.
Pena played the Newport Folk Festival in 1969, but was unable to launch a successful career and for much of his life, the royalties from writing this song were his only income.
Like many songs from the '60s and '70s, many people assume the song is about drugs and the airplane flying high was a metaphor for being high on a drug. They will point to other lyrics and find hidden meaning in them also to support the theory. In truth, however, it was a song about Pena's airplane trip from Boston to Montreal to play the first-ever date with T-Bone Walker's band.
