seherazade: This cache is looking rather worse for wear and, as many of the series have been archived a while ago, I've decided that it's time to archive #'s1, 2 and 3 too now. Cache container removed today. to all the cachers who've signed the logbooks and enjoyed these caches.

Geocache Description:

A series of caches around the hamlet of Breadstone with an Arabian Nights theme – individual episodes to complete the whole story!

The caches have been inspired by the chapters - and all get a mention in this series - in Stories from the Arabian Nights retold by Laurence Housman and first published in 1907. Cache descriptions generally include a quotation from the relevant chapters... and perhaps a link to the cache itself…

The circular route covers varied terrain including lanes, a green lane and footpaths across fields. An OS map or means of following designated footpaths is essential. I'd allow 4 hours.

In wet conditions, mud can make the going really arduous so wellies will be indispensable and the cross-country sections are not suitable for wheelchairs or buggies. The caches have been designed with families in mind but as the whole circuit is likely to take the best part of a day the geokids will need to be keen! The picnic table near #9 could come in handy!

You should encounter a wide range of farm animals and wildlife along the way. Please be mindful of health and safety, and be prepared for treacherous mud, slippery stiles and bridges, brambles, nettles... Enjoy! Dogs ought to be kept on leads.

The ultimate in storytelling series, the Tales of the One Thousand and One Nights, also known as the Arabian Nights, are as ancient as can be.

Surrounding all the stories is the tale of the Sultan Sharyzar and Scheherazade. Sharyzar has a very nasty habit of taking a new wife every day but having her killed the next morning. The supply of brides understandably runs short so the brave Scheherazade, daughter of the sultan’s anxious vizier, agrees to marry Sharyzar with the idea of saving the lives of the remaining brides-to-be.

To do this, Scheherazade must now use her ingenuity to save her own life!
On their wedding night, Scheherazade entrances Sharyzar with a bedtime story. Then, hoping that he won’t be able to resist finding out what happens in another one, she tells him just enough to get him interested and is then allowed to complete the story the next night.

Scheherazade manages to stick to this strategy for one thousand and one nights and, thanks to her story-telling skills, by the end of this time she has won Sharyzar’s heart.  Full circle and a happy ending!

The origins of the tales are lost in the mists of time. They have been the subject of intense scholarship and have enormously influenced world literature. The many literary techniques used are understood to be just as important and effective now as then.  There are several well-known versions, often beautifully illustrated, not to mention the popular takes on individual stories, such as Disney’s Aladdin, which keep the enchantment very much alive today.

Breadstone Before Bedtime #1 Ali Baba

Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves

“As soon as he felt sure that they were not returning, Ali Baba came down from the tree and made his way at once to that part of the rock where he had seen the captain and his men enter. And there at the word “Open Sesame!” a door suddenly revealed itself and opened.
“Great was his astonishment when he perceived a spacious and vaulted chamber lighted from above through a fissure in the rock; and there spread out before him lay treasures in profusion, bales of merchandise, silks, brocades, and above all gold and silver lying in loose heaps or in sacks piled one upon another.”

Original contents: logbook, pencil, swappables: a few foreign coins, miniature treasure chest
