Irlanda es un país que ha experimentado tradicionalmente el fenómeno de la emigración, sobre todo en periodos concretos de su historia.
Aunque la cifra varía mucho y es difícil de estimar, se calcula que del orden de 70 millones de descendientes de irlandeses están repartidos por todo el mundo, lo que no está nada mal para un país de 6 millones de habitantes.
Allá donde van, suelen mantener vivas sus tradiciones, y es habitual que viajen a Irlanda para descubrir a sus antepasados.
Existen numerosas entidades públicas y privadas que ayudan en esta labor, hasta el punto de que el gobierno irlandés tiene un sitio web dedicado en exclusiva al tema: http://www.irishgenealogy.ie. En él destaca la guía Tracing your ancestors, que os puede dar una idea de la magnitud del fenómeno.
La verdad es que siempre es interesante conocer a los antepasados.

Over much of its history Ireland has been a country of emigration, its population dropping dramatically at certain periods.
Although it’s difficult to estimate, there are currently about 70 million Irish descendants scattered around the world, not bad at all for a country with a population of 6 million.
These Irish descendants usually keep alive their traditions and it’s not uncommon for them to travel to Ireland in search of their ancestors.
Different public and private entities help with this, and even the Irish Government has a website devoted to this subject: http://www.irishgenealogy.ie. Here you can find the guide Tracing your ancestors, which gives an idea of the magnitude of this phenomenon.
It’s always interesting to know about our ancestors.
