Befalsskolen for Infanteriet i Nord-Norge (BSIN) ble opprettet i 1899, da under navnet Tromsø Stifts Underofficersskole. Skolens første permanente bygg ble oppført der hvor Rådhus 1 har sin parkeringsplass i dag. Dette bygget brant ned i 1970. Gymsalen stod ferdig i 1904, og har heldigvis overlevd helt fram til i dag.
Gymsalen var ikke bare i bruk som gymnastikksal for gryende underofficerer, men ble også et mye brukt lokale for den sivile befolkningen i Harstad. Den har blant annet vært brukt til trening og stevner i regi av for Harstad Turnforening, konserter, basarer, danselokale og ball for å nevne noe.
Under andre verdenskrig var naturlig nok ikke befalsskolen i aktivitet. Da den kom i gang igjen i 1951 ble tyskernes gamle brakkeleir på Ila tatt i bruk, cirka 200m sørvest for cachen. I 1987 flyttet BSIN inn i nye lokaler på Trondenes, og da ble det ikke like stor bruk for den gamle gymnastikksalen. BSIN ble nedlagt i 2003.
Bygget er vernet, og det skapte en utfordring for videre bruk av lokalet. Etter at BSIN var nedlagt ble bygget solgt, og arkitekt Jim Myrstad bidro til løsningen: Et bygg inni bygget. I 2006 oppstod A:rt gymsal, en samlokalisering av småbedrifter med fokus på kultur og design. Den smarte løsningen gjør at den gamle gymsalens unike sjel er tatt vare på, og samtidig holdes bygget levende og er i daglig bruk.

The officer candidate school for the Infantry in Northern Norway (BSIN) was founded in 1899. This building was finished in 1904, and here the students carried out their physical training. The building was important to the civilian population in Harstad. The local gymnastics association used it for training and competitions, and there was also arranged concerts, lotteries and dancing here.
During the second world war the BSIN was not active, naturally. Yet a few years after the war, in 1951, the school started up again. In 1987 they moved to new facilities at Trondenes, and in 2003 BSIN was closed for good.
BSIN's old physical training-building was sold shortly after. Since the building is protected, the buyers could not change much about it. The local architect Jim Myrstad helped out, and the solution became to construct a building inside the old building, with modern offices and studio-facilities. It is now called A:rt gymsal and is home to several small businesses working mostly within culture and design.
