Geocache Description:

Access to this cache is via Raekohua Road and is a sistema container with a few goodies hidden in a dry place guarded by a disused point lever

This cache is close to the Coal bins and screening plant at the Tangarakau Railway yards where Egmont Colleries sorted and dispatched the production from their mine located in the Tangarakau Gorge 6km away. Their mine was located 100 metres from the Forgotten World Highway and is the site of another new geocache called "Coalmine Corner". The coalmine operated between 1926 and 1935 and was closed when the owners were convinced the coal was of inferior quality after NZR refused to purchase it. A 2 foot (610mm) tramway ran the 6km towing 40 skip wagons which were emptied into 2 storied bins to the left of the cache site. Now this deserted town which boasted a population of over 1000 has only 5 residents.  Visitors passing through on the Forgotten World Adventures golf-carts are the only traffic on the mothballed railway. You may wonder what an orange shipping container with a large hole in it is parked on the side of the road. Explanation: It was on a railway wagon that derailed in one of the 4 tunnels just east of Tangarakau and was dragged through the tunnels causing a fair bit of damage. This happened about 20 years ago when this line was the northern freight outlet for Taranaki.
