Geocache Description:

Subtitled “An Introduction to Phillip Island’s Wildlife”, this is one of a series of drive-by traditional caches designed especially for those who don’t enjoy multi or mystery caches.

The micro log is inside a larger container inside a regular container! Please swap within the theme & make sure the log container stays.

The scenery is nothing special, but the caches are relatively easy to find and, I hope, entertaining (maybe even a little bit scary!).

Middle-sized children should enjoy them (the drive-by bit plus elevation of some caches is not suited to small children, and in my experience nothing can cheer a determinedly sullen teenager).

Phillip Island is home to a range of wildlife, including about a million Short-tailed Shearwaters, which are also called Muttonbirds or Yolla, an indigenous name. They have a wing span of 1m and are often seen skimming along the water surface at high speeds - they can go as fast as 85km/h. One of the few migratory birds that come to Australia to breed, they arrive each year in late September to seek out their partner from the previous breeding season. They dig burrows in the sand dunes, which can be up to 2m deep, and lay one large white egg which both parents take turns to incubate then feed the chick. Chicks can wait up to 2 weeks between meals while their parents fly to the waters around Antarctica to feed on krill, diving as deep as 50 meters to find them. Parents begin their migration in April, leaving behind a chick still covered with brown down, almost twice the weight of an adult. The chick stays in the burrow for 2-3 weeks surviving on its fat and oil reserves, until it replaces its down with feathers , then learns to fly and makes the migration to the Aleutian Islands near Alaska. Shearwaters usually complete the 15,000km migration in 8 weeks, although one bird made the trip in 6 weeks!
