Old Westport Cemetery


Orowaiti Middle Cemetery
Orowaiti Middle Cemetery is the proper name.
In 1930 a Swiss born carpenter was fataly injured while working on the bridge across Cascade Creek along the Buller River. His young wife was carrying their first child and gave birth to a healthy boy 3 months after his father was burried at Orowaite Middle Cemetery. It took till the late 1990's before the son visited his father's grave. His mother returned to Switserland when he was 3 years old but until well into retirement he never found the courage to find his roots. When his mother died and photos, letters and documentation about this far away land surfaced something happened. With his children as encouragement and the help of the internet the history of a small fatherless kiwi boy was slowly assembled and ultimately he stood at his fathers grave. This cache is in honour of all those who suffered and endured hardship in making New Zealand what it is today.
