An advert in the Cape Argus of 19th April 1832 states the following:
There is a large and commodious Dwelling House, wine store, stabling,, slave apartments, blacksmith’s shop, water mill and other buildings. It is planted with 15,000 vines, an assortment of fruit trees ……..
The forests of Hout Bay supplied timber for the Cape Settlement and as early as 1693 a wagon route had been extended to the valley. It was facing this track that the imposing homestead was built. The front gable has the date. 1800
1677 First agreement to rent land was for farming was signed
- Farmer JL Bierman of Kronendal was given the task of watching out for enemy ships and reporting to the signal post on the Nek.
- The homestead was built. Dr Mary Cook mentions that Kronendal is “the only well preserved H shaped Dutch house left in the Cape peninsular”
The two sections to the back of the homestead are used as offices and a shop, and so kept up and preserved.
The landlord, shop keeper and staff and security guards are aware of the cache. It is advisable to go hunting during office hours as the parking area is very busy from about 6pm every evening and on Sunday lunchtimes
