Tegenwoordig heeft bijna iedereen een flatscreen. Als er bij zo’n televisie geen signaal wordt waargenomen, dan wordt het scherm blauw of zwart. Vroeger met de analoge televisies was dit niet het geval. Als er geen signaal was, dan zag men alleen ruis. Er wordt beweerd dat de ruis op een analoge televisie voor 1 procent bestaat uit achtergrondstraling welke zijn oorsprong vindt uit de oerknal. De rest van de ruis wordt veroorzaakt door het apparaat zelf en andere bronnen.

Nowadays almost everyone has a flat screen TV. If such a TV has no signal the screen will turn blue or black. With the analog televisions, this was not the case. If there was no signal, it showed only static noise. It is claimed that 1 procent of the static noise on an analog television consists of background radiation which originates from the big bang. The rest of the noise is caused by the device itself, and other sources.



Meer dan 40 jaar geleden deden Arno Penzias en Robert Wilson experimenten met de Homdel Horn antenne. Deze antenne kon signalen van satellieten ontvangen. Penzias en Wilson gebruikte de antenne om radiogolven vanuit de melkweg te onderzoeken. 

More than 40 years ago Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson did experiments with Homdel Horn antenna. This antenna could receive signals from satellites. Penzias and Wilson used the antenna to explore radio waves from the galaxy.


In plaats van de stilte die ze nodig hadden, hoorde zij continue ruis. Het maakte niet uit in welke richting zij de antenne richtte of wat ze deden, ze bleven de ruis horen. Ze hadden alle mogelijke bronnen van ruis geëlimineerd maar konden er niet achter komen waar de ruis vandaan kwam en inspecteerde de antenne. Binnenin vonden zij duivenpoep van de duiven die in de antenne nesten hadden gemaakt. De duiven werden gevangen en ze werden kilometers verder weer uitgezet. Maar de duiven bleven terug komen. Als laatste poging werden de duiven afgemaakt. Na deze (dubieuze) actie bleven zij nog altijd de ruis horen. Op een later moment beseften ze dat de ruis die zij ontvangen niet veroorzaakt wordt door “vervuiling “ in het experiment maar de achtergrond straling is die zijn oorsprong vindt bij de oerknal. In 1978 kregen Penzias en Wilson de Nobel prijs voor de natuurkunde.

Instead of the silence they needed, They heard continuous noise. It did not matter in which direction they pointed the antenna or what they did, they kept hearing the noise. They had all possible sources of noise eliminated but could not figure out where the noise came and inspected the antenna. Inside they found pigeon droppings of the pigeons who nested in the antenna​​. The pigeons were captured and they were freed kilometers away. But the birds kept coming back. As a last attempt, the birds where killed. After this (dubious) action they still heared the noise. At a later time, they realized that the noise they receive is not caused by "pollution" in the experiment but the background radiation that originated in the Big Bang. In 1978, Penzias and Wilson received the Nobel prize for physics.
