1st Blarigowrie Scout Group is a member of the South African Scout Association, a volunteer youth organization.
The aim of the South African Scout Association is to contribute to the development of boys, girls and young adults in achieving their full potentials as individuals, as responsible citizens and as members of their local, national, and international communities by developing their character, training them in citizenship and developing their spiritual, social, mental, and physical qualities.
The South African Scout Association is based on the principles of duty to God, duty to others, and duty to self. These three principles govern the entire advancement programme and teach the Scout to be loyal to the religion that expresses them, to be loyal to the country in which they reside and to be responsible in their own development.
This aim is achieved through a strong and active program that inspires young people to do their best and to always be prepared. A few scouting activities include camping, hiking, sailing orienteering, pioneering and geocaching!. By learning useful skills and growing in self confidence, generations of Scouts have grown up to become some of the world’s outstanding leaders. For example, of the 24 men to travel to the moon on the Apollo 9 through Apollo 17 missions, 21 were Scouts, including 10 of the 12 men who physically walked on the moon's surface, and all three members of the crew of Apollo 13.
The SA Scout Association is a member of the World Organisation of the Scout Movement (WOSM), the largest youth organization in the world, with a current membership of over 30 million and represented in 161 countries. Over the last 106 years scouting has been experienced by over 300 million young people.
The scout movement was founded by a British soldier, Col. (later Lord) Robert Baden-Powell who fought in the Anglo-Boer War in South Africa. While besieged at Mafeking, Baden-Powell organized a cadet corps of boys aged 12 to 15 to act as messengers and orderlies. This experience was later to be one of his inspirations for the scouting movement; in fact many scouting traditions have South African roots.
Baden-Powell tested his ideas by arranging the first scout camp on Brownsea Island on 1 Aug 1907 for 20 boys. The camp was a great success and proved to Baden Powell that his training and methods appealed to young people and really worked. In January 1908, he published "Scouting for Boys", a book issued in fortnightly parts at four pence each. It was an immediate success. Baden-Powell had only intended to provide a method of training boys, something that existing youth organizations such as the Boys' Brigade and Y.M.C.A. could adopt. To his surprise, youngsters started to organise themselves into what was destined to become today, the world's largest voluntary youth movement. In 1908, only 7 months after the first scout camp, a few troops in sprang up in Cape Town and Scouting started in South Africa, the second country in the world after the UK.
Bear Grylls well known from his TV program, “Ultimate Survivor” is currently the Chief Scout of the UK. He portrays true scouting skills and lives up to the scouting motto “Be prepared”.
