My brother married a gal from the Czech Republic. He went to Prague for a weekend, met her at a club, and they fell in love. Aaahh. After a 2 year, mostly long distance relationship, they got married and settled in the Denver, CO area. He was still travelling with his job a lot, so they got a dog to keep his wife company when he was gone. One of the stipulations of their marriage was that Ivona would be able to go home every summer to see her family. She and the kids will go for a couple months, and my brother usually only can go for 2 weeks. When he leaves, we often get the honor of babysitting the dog. Since we don’t have any pets, the dog is subsequently spoiled rotten by Little J and loves it. Born in 2003, Slivo (pronounced SLEE – VO) is a flat-haired retriever with the perfect disposition. Wonderful with the kids, well behaved and only barks at doorbells, bunnies and squirrels. We walk her twice a day around this park. When she was younger, she would chase all the bunnies and squirrels through the woods. Now, she is much slower and would rather stop and sniff everything along the way. But you can tell she still chases bunnies in her dreams.
Slivo enjoyed geocaching with us last summer, and we wanted to place a cache in her honor at our neighborhood park. To find this cache, you will need to learn a few things about Czech culture. Use the number in parenthesis after the answer to determine the coordinates. All questions should be easily answered by Mr. Google and can be verified at Evince.

- Slivo was trained by my sister-in-law whose native language is Czech. We joke that we know enough Czech to speak dog. When we say ‘Hodná holka’, we are telling her:
Come here (6)
Lay down (5)
Good girl (8)
Stop barking (7)
- Silvo’s “mom” grew up in Zlín, CZ. Zlín is which direction from the capital city in the Czech Republic?
NE (3)
W (2)
SW (4)
SE (1)
- Slivo’s “grandfather” in Zlín, Milan Kalus, manages the city Tennis Club - Tenisový Klub SK Zlín. Milan played doubles against Ivan Lendl back in the 1960’s. When my sister-in-law was 14, she ranked #10 in Czech for women, and played against Martina Hingis. Find the website for the tennis club and the phone number to call for court reservations. What is the 8th digit of the phone number?
- When Slivo’s “parents” got married in CZ, my husband and I went over for the wedding. They have several wedding traditions that differ from those in the US. One that we found quite amusing was the kidnapping of the bride half-way thru the reception. The bridal party kidnaps the bride and goes to a different location for drinks until they are discovered by the groom. When the groom finds the bride, he is required to:
Sing her a love song (4)
Pay the bill for all the drinks (6)
Announce his undying love for her to the entire restaurant (3)
Dance with her on top of a table (7)
- In what year did Czechoslovakia dissolve into its constituent states, the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic?
1995 (6)
1993 (3)
1989 (9)
1985 (8)
