Part of the Ettrick Marshes mini series.
From here it is possible to see across the Ettrick Valley to Thirlestane burn, a wooded cleuch set between Thirlstane Hill on the right and Ramsaycleuch Hill on the left. The woodland in this valley is particularly attractive in autumn, comprising of a high proportion of native broadleaved trees, giving an excellent display of autumn colour. A waterfall, called Black Spout can be found half way up the burn. At the bottom is the site of Thirlestane House. Thirlestane is the seat of the Nisbet family. When the rather eccentric 14th lord Napier and Ettrick inherited the house in 1954, on the death of his father, he had it blown up as the cost of any dry rot treatment and subsequent restoration was prohibitive!
Stout footwear is recommended.
A map of Ettrick Marshes is available on the related webpage. Please note - the map boards on site are slightly out of date: the Deephope (Red) route has been rerouted along the new track that runs up the hill from the Tima Carpark and joins where the High Conifer Forest (Green) route and Gamescleuch Linn Loop (Yellow) route meet. The map provided in the related webpage is accurate.
