NYC Series will bring you stories of people, places, landmarks & history from my Hometown.
Growing up in the streets of the Bronx you would get a nickname that everybody would call you and that's what you were known as, sometimes it would be your Graffiti name. I was REZ and then later changed to BRONX HOOD that's what my Tag was and when we went Bombing we would fill up backpacks with Spray paint, Markers and stickers. We would hit streets, underpasses, Subway tunnels, trucks WHATEVER! Yes I know it is illegal but it was the streetlife I grew up in. Some writers were really serious about it they would try to go "All City" to have their name in each Boro (Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan & Staten Island) and some writers did accomplish it. The film Style Wars is a 1983 documentary on hip hop culture. The film has an emphasis on graffiti, although breakdancing and rapping are covered to a lesser extent. The documentary shows both the young artists struggling to express themselves through their art, and their points of view on the subject of graffiti, as well as the views of then New York City Mayor Ed Koch, one-armed graffiti writer Case/Kase 2, graffiti writer Skeme and his mother, graffiti "villain" Cap, now deceased graffiti writer Dondi, Seen and Shy 147, breakdancer Crazy Legs of Rock Steady Crew, police officers, art critics, subway maintenance workers, as well as several "people on the street"
