Geocache Description:

An indentation in the ground on Rufus Avenue at Hillcrest Street marks a former mine site.

In the HALIFAX HERALD of January 25,1898, "The Halifax Klondike" described a visit to the gold fields at Geizer's Hill where many people were prospecting. Gold fever had struck Halifax. Alexander Taylor was reported to have found gold on his property on Geizer's Hill at Dutch Village.
Hubert Smart worked in the gold mine, where in the 1930's he drilled and blasted in the holes. Dick Hyland and a Mr. MacCullum were local prospectors. On Rufus Avenue at Hillcrest Street-the indentation of the old mine is visible still. Edith Deal remembers when a house on Rufus Avenue partially sunk into the ground due to the underground tunnels of the mine. (Images of our past 'THE LITTLE DUTCH VILLAGE: Devonna & Don Edwards)
