Mangakino is now a friendly peaceful village, which had it's origins as the base camp for 4 hydro dams of the Waikato River chain of power stations.
The "Bus Stop Cafe" at the end of the road lakeside has good coffee and hamburgers and a nice outlook onto the lake.
It is a pleasant 30 minute walk from the Bus Stop Cafe at the lakeside reserve along the pathway/boardwalk of the Waikato River Walkway heading south. Alternatively you can drive along the golf course side road to the end of the road and walk about 20min to the GCZ, but you miss an interesting section of boardwalk through wetlands. The concrete building surrounded by water out from the boardwalk seat was the strongroom for holding wages for the dam workers in the days of cash pay packets. The cash came from Tokoroa banks to the strongroom prior to payday. (Fairly interesting eh!)
The cache is a snaptop plastic 150ml container with GC notice, log and small pencil inside.
Please replace the camo well.
The town is heading to be a "Motorhome Friendly Town" with the NZMCA, and has installed an excellent dump station at the rugby grounds to assist. There are supplies etc available and the town pharmacy has an extensive hardware and gift department worth visiting.
The town is largely holiday homes now, with wake boarding being a major activity on the lake as well as sport rowing.
