A relatively unknown spot where the Barn Swallows roost during the summer.
The Barn Swallows that come down to roost in the reed just North of Durban is relatively well known. It is truly an amazing site. Thousands of these small birds circle just before sunset and then drop like stones into the reeds to roost for the night.
This same phenomenon happens along the Umkobi Lagoon near Marina Beach.
I do not know what time of the year the Swallows arrive in the area and then migrate north again but I have been told that they are here over the months of at least January and February.
The birds flock to the lagoon about 10 -15 minutes before sunset and all the birds are settled in the reeds 10 minutes after sunset.
I was fortunate enough to witness this great display. The really wonderful thing about it is that few people know about it so it felt like our own private show as we sit in our small group on the bank of the lagoon watching as 1000s of birds created a swarm and circled in the sky and then just dive into the reeds disappearing.
I highly recommend you do this cache at sunset or come back and watch this awesome display.
