This cache is located along a very pleasant 30 minute circular forestry walk close to Parkes Castle. The pathway rises gradually to about 100m above car park level. There are panoramic views over the nearby Lough Gill. Unsurfaced parking at the start of the walk (Co-Ordinates w54 15.945 w008 19.710). Take the first left turn about 200m past castle(local road number L8151) and left again after about 30m. The path commences along a quiet stream. Take care on the way back as it can be slippery.
One can imagine the Spanish nobleman, Francisco de Cuellar, in 1588, one of the few survivors of the ill fated Spanish Armada, hiding in these hills until he was given shelter in the nearby O’Rourkes castle before returning to Spain. However, when the English got to hear of the generosity of an Irish chieftan toward the enemy, they destroyed the castle and executed O’Rourke. The ruins were presented to Captain Robert Parke, an English planter, who constructed, in 1610, the manor house known today as Parkes Castle. The cache is in a small cylindrical tin box. good luck.
