Geocache Description:

Watch Your Little Hoofies

Located near the mouth of Bois d'Arc Creek southwest of Ponca City.  The creek is named for the bois d'arc tree, which are common along its banks.  Also known as the osage orange, hedge and hedge apple tree, the bois d'arc was prized for wood staves used by Osage and Commanche bow makers.  Bois d'arc trees were planted by the WPA from the Great Depression through World War II, in shelter belt hedges throughout the Southern Great Plains region, to reduce soil erosion by wind.  Bois d'arc trees are easily recognized in the fall by their lime green orange sized fruit, and also by their formidable thorns. Park about 30 yards south of Riverview Road and approach from the southwest to avoid most of the thorny trees.
