A series of caches to memorialize fallen firefighters in the state of Nevada.
Williams, Meredith R.-Virginia City Fire Department (October 20, 1872)
Williams, a member of Nevada Hook & Ladder Company No. 1, was among those who volunteered to fight the fire in the depths of the Yellow Jacket mine at Gold Hill near Virginia City on April 7, 1869. "Meredith Williams is a really unique situation. Although we had no records of him in Virginia City, we found he actually was one of the folks who had fought in the Yellow Jacket mine. We had to go back and backtrack his death because he didn't actually die until three years later," - Steve Frady. Williams qualifies as dying in the line of duty because doctors determined his death resulted from toxic gas and smoke inhalation. His health declined after the fire and he died "in consequence of his being asphyxiated," as the death certificate put it Oct. 30, 1872.
