Geocache Description:

Down The Line is a series of caches to mark the Belfast to Bangor line of the Belfast and County Down Railway (BCDR).

The Black Path used to run from Holywood Train Station to the Cricket Grounds until the railway line was moved closer to the sea in order to accommodate the Holywood through-pass which was completed in 1972. Part of the path remains and leds from Sullivan Place to Spafield. the Cricket grounds are sadly no longer there.

A common sight on the line would have been the Baltic class of locomotive (above). They proved to be an unsucessful aquisition for the BCDR as they were very heavy and consumed an enormous amount of coal, for these reasons they were transfered to work solely on the shorter Belfast to Bangor Line.

The Baltic locomotives may well have helped to name the Black Path. Apparently the path was so named as cinders from the engines were regularly spread over the path.

The cache itself is a micro, thiner and longer than a 35mm film canister and is partially concealed.
