A unique religious building in the Wairarapa.
Approximately 150 meters down the drive to the right of the cache hide, and through the trees, is Masterton's unique and iconic Greek Orthodox Church. This church which is privately owned was constructed by ex Masterton personality and businessman Mr George Panteilis in 1979 as a gift to the greek community.
The architecture of the church is in the Byzantine style with a geometric cross shaped floor plan. The interior is covered wall to ceiling with painted christian mosaics depicting the 43 icons of the New Testament.
These icons took local artist Steven Allwood a year to paint and are bright, colouful and in excellent condittion. Promienent of the mosaics is a depiction of Christ raiding the underworld to set free the righteous dead and raising them into life of the world to come. One notes the power, the assurance and joyous confidence with which Christ carries out this post-crucifixation task. Allwood has him standing on the broken doors of Hades, his legs flexed like a surfer's as he reaches down to draw Adam and Eve up with him into the realm of glory.
Take care removing and replacing the cache hide.
