Geocache Description:

This cache is a few hundred feet from the site of the east end of the old tunnel known as the Kennedy Tunnel when it opened in 1903 and was renamed the Broadway Tunnel in 1914. The tunnel was closed to vehicle traffic in 1937 when the Caldecott Tunnel opened and was closed permanently in 1947. It was 1040 feet long and 17 feet wide. Congratulations BerkeleyBoomers for FTF!

There is nothing left to see there except a depresssion in the hillside. Coordinates for the east end of the tunnel are given as a waypoint below, but it is probably not worth trying to reach it.

In 2022, the EBRPD built a new fence and gate that made it very difficult to reach the original cache location.  I have moved the cache to just outside the new gate.

I first explored the west end of this tunnel about fifty years ago on bike rides into the hills. There was no more to see then than there is now. That end is currently graced by two geocaches, the virtual cache This May be a Bore, GCD461 and the traditional cache This Could Never be Boring, GC1YWVC.

Ever since I first saw the west end, I wondered where the tunnel came out, and now I know.
