Geocache Description:

Cache situated at  Woodside Railway Station

The railway from Wellington eventually reached Greytown in 1880. A three mile long branch line joined Woodside to Greytown and now forms the Greytown - Woodside cycle trail. In those days it took at least 3 hours to travel from Greytown to the capital by rail a journey which today takes approximately one hour.

In 1953 this branch line was closed and the old Greytown Railway Station building was jacked up and taken by rail to Woodside where to day it sits all forlorn and rundown near the current and more modern Woodside Station building used today.

What is not so well know is that in times past the Woodside Railway Station formed and important transit point for keen trampers attempting an east - west traverse of the Tararua Ranges. Trampers would arrive by train at Woodside then head via the Waiohine Road, to the Reeves track then climb over Reeves before descending to the Tauherenikau River valley. From here they would climb up to Alpha and the Alpha hut via the Omega track before traversing via "The Dress Circle" to Mt Hector. Fom Mt Hector it was a descent to Kime Hut, then Field Hut and down to Otaki Forks then out to Otaki station for the return train trip to Wellington. All up a three to 5 day trip.

The cache is located at the old Greytown Railway Station Building.
