Glenorchy is a ‘gob-smacking’ 40 minute scenic drive from Queenstown. The drive is renowned as one of the top 8 scenic drives in the world. The township of Glenorchy sits on the shores of Lake Wakatipu and is known as the ‘Gateway to Paradise’. Glenorchy is a sought after location for the film industry with recent shoots such as The Chronicles of Narnia, X Men Origins: Wolverine, the LOTR trilogy and the Hobbit. Glenorchy is probably named after Glen Orchy in Argyll, Scotland. The road to Glenorchy was opened in 1962 unlocking a way for many travellers to explore this magnificent area. Glenorchy is home to about 500 people, there is an assortment of accommodation, cafes, shops and bars as well as many tourist activities.
