Geocache Description:

This cache is hidden just of the Western States 100 trail, between the Highway 49 crossing and No Hands Bridge race aid station. In summer, it is a nice place to sit and cool your feet during the long hike.  In winter, we suggest wearig water proof shoes and being prepared to get a little muddy.

To make this an overall easier terrain cache, we suggest bringing two cars, parking one at the confluence of the North and Middle Forks of the American River and driving the second car to one of the trail heads at the top of the canyon. Or, you could just park at the confulence and hike up from the No Hands Bridge trail head.

The Western States 100-mile Endurance Run was the first of its kind. First run in 1974, it has become the most prestigious race of its kind.  Beginning in Squaw Valley and ending in Auburn, racers must ascend 18,000 feet and descend 23,000 feet.  The trail is highly variable with terrain ranging from paved streets to dirt roads to narrow, rocky, hiking trails, to ice-cold river crossings.  People who are accepted into the race must be in top physical condition and will be pulled from the race if they are found to be in danger at any point during the race. The reasons why people put themselves through such a grueling test of physical and mental stamina are as varied as the runners themselves; everyone has their own goals.
