Geocache Description:

From this geocache location you are pretty well in the central hub of Hanmer Springs. Boiling up the Billy for sweetened tea is a thing of the past, there are a multitude of cafes clustered round the hub of Hanmer Springs, several in sight of this geocache, so grab your GPS device and search out this GC.

The Hanmer Plains were named after Thomas Hanmer who helped in the early survey of the area in the early 1850’s. Thomas Hanmer and others have been credited with the discovery of the springs at Hanmer later in 1859 which became a popular spot for travellers and musterers alike the pools were in a natural state from which the bather emerged possibly less clean than when he went in (see picture of the pools in 1878). Things have changed significantly since those days, travellers can have a leisurely soak in the pools without slipping in the mud.

The Hanmer plains were completely treeless up until the early 1900’s, check out the early photo of Conical Hill, stand near geocache location and have a look up Conical hill Road and see the difference today…

(Information was gathered from the book “Much Ado…. Hanmer Springs 1883 – 1983, Rosemary Ensor)

This area is extremely busy you will have to take extreme care when retrieving and replacing this cache, Stealth is paramount or selecting an appropriate time with less muggles about could be the better option.

You may want to bring your own pen in case the pencil is not operational.
