Perched on a promontory overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Kohala Point Lighthouse has served as a beacon for seafaring travelers for one hundred and twelve years. The Wilder Steamship Company, requested the light be built on this peninsula as early as 1891 in order to warn ships of the dangerous low-lying, off-shore reefs. Started in 1897 as a wood tower by the Republic of Hawaii and completed as a reinforced concrete lighthouse on March 1933.
Because of erosion the old lighthouse was demolished and replaced by a monopole in 2009. The locals camp and fish in this area. With the cliffs nearby, please be careful with your children and your pets! The winds here can be quite strong as well, so be careful near the cliff edge. If you are the FTF for this cache and find a Geocoin/TB it is yours to keep. If there isn't one, take your pick from the swag inside for your FTF prize.
