The medieval town walls in Youghal were a state of the art defence system in their day.
The walls were originally constructed to keep out the natives. As the town developed in commercial prominence, the threat of invasion also increased. The one weakness in defence terms was the possibility of an invading fleet landing as Ferrypoint. Cannon were placed on top on the highest sections of the walls, with the capacity to reach across the estuary.
The cache site affords a good overview of the sheer size and magnificance of the walls. Look to the left and you will see an entrance gate, behind which you will find the beautiful, spacious and well-maintained College Gardens. From this gate, you can also gain access to the top of the wall, and do your own watchtower duty.
Exercise care if driving as there is a drop from the road to the lawn fronting the wall, with only a small section protected by a barrier.
