This is the second in a series of 6 geocaches on a circular geocached walk from Silverdale to Jenny Browns point. It is 3.7 miles of walking on sometimes rough terrain along public rights of way with plenty of variety from field to woodland and coastal. Allow 1.5 to 2hours.
From the last geocache, you bear right down the slope and then left through a gate into woods. Follow the path through the woods keeping to the top of the cliff (Woodwell cliff). You are now looking down on Woodwell which you can visit on your return. Your GPS should keep you on the right route as you approach the second Geocache some distance over the road (Hollins Lane). The FP signs point you to Quakers Stang.
You are now on Heald Brow which used to be part of the Hazelwood Hall estate nearby. The hall is not visible because of the lie of the land but has been in turn a private residence, a Roman Catholic (St John of God) sanatorium and latterly has been converted into private holiday apartments by Pringle Homes. There is a permissive footpath that skirts the gardens over to your left but this is not included in this more direct walk.
In 1999 Heald Brow and Leavens Field, which surround Hazelwood Hall, were acquired by the National Trust. With the help of an organic farmer they have managed it to increase biodiversity which has been successful with more flora and butterflies including fritillaries now recorded.
After finding this cache you will drop down a steep hill where you need to take care in muddy conditions. Your reward on the way is a great view over Leighton Moss and Warton Crag. Below you is Quakers Stang which is the earth mound barrier to high tides reaching the railway and the road. Don,t take the footpath along the Stang but turn right towards the Bay.
Original cache content: Green snake, bulldog clip, glue pen, 5 mini clothes pegs,4 fluffy coloured balls, dice, 4 treacle toffees, Jotter pad and pencil, Travel Bug Riccarton.
