Geocache Description:

The Parish Church of Sarum St.Martin

A simple offset cache starting at the parish church of Sarum St. Martin, Salisbury, with a short walk to the final cache location.  Due to its location, a certain degree of stealth will be required when locating and replacing the cache.  Parking at the church is limited, and is restricted during certain hours in the local streets, but there are plenty of car parks available around the city.

The Church

Located on the Eastern side of Salisbury and predating the founding of Salisbury itself, the church of Sarum St. Martin was the first in the region and was first mentioned in a document dated 1091.  The majority of the body of the current church, however, is 15th century with a 12th century tower, 13th century chancel and 14th century spire.

The church is well worth a visit and features a magnificent finely carved rood screen.  Apart from the usual ‘Calvary’ or ‘rood’, the gallery shows an array of figures associated with the ecclesiastical history of the Salisbury Diocese.

The bell tower contains an impressive array of eight bells: a Treble and Second, both by Mears and Stainbank, London; Third, and Fourth, both by Thomas Mears, London; Fifth and Sixth, both by Richard Flory, Salisbury; and a Seventh and Tenor, both by John Wallis, Salisbury.  The bells are rung every Sunday, with practice usually on a Tuesday.  They are also often rung on a Saturday by visiting bellringers from various parts of the country.

Records show there has been a church organ at St. Martins since 1567.  The current organ was built by William Hill in 1869 at ground level, but was raised to its present position on the loft in 1898 in order to create a choir vestry.  The organ underwent restoration in 1994 and in 2002 Nicholsons added three new ranks to the pedal organ, increasing the flexibility of the instrument.

Further information about the church, its facilities and functions can be found on the Church’s website at www.sarumstmartin.org.uk .
