The Story of Miles Giffard

The bodies of husband and wife Charles and Elizabeth Giffard were found at the base of cliffs at Porthpean after the housemaid raised the alarm on finding the house empty.

Charles and Elizabeth had a difficult relationship with their son Miles.  They wanted him to follow in Charles footsteps as a solicitor but Miles never held down a job for any length of time.  Although Miles lived at home he also visited London and formed a relationship with Gabrielle Vallance.  On hearing of this romance his father ordered Miles to end it and threatened to cut him off without a penny and in doing so brought about his own demise.

Miles lay in wait at the family home for Charles to return from work and battered him unconscious with an iron pipe.  He also did the same to his mother on her return to the house.  Using a wheelbarrow he transported them one at a time to the edge of the cliff and tipped them over.  He then drove to London overnight to join Gabrielle and pawned his mothers jewels.  He was arrested the following evening and confessed to the murders saying he must have had a brainstorm.

There was a 3 day trial at Bodmin and several witnesses testified to his mental instability but the jury found him guilty after 30 minutes and despite an appeal he was hanged at Horfied Prison, Bristol in 1953.
