George Dam Hike
A beautiful and scenic hike to the old George Dam in the mountains. Depending from where you start, this is a more or less 17 km hike with some very steep elevation ascents. Moderate fitness required.
You can start your hike at Dikkop st, Eden in George. Remember as you get closer to the top of the hill to stay on the double track running up the hill almost all the way to the dam. (Only the last 300m is single track)
The other single track turning off and running at the bottom is very much overgrown and I wouldn’t advise it at all. (Though some people still manage to go that way and it makes the hike even shorter.)
An alternative and much more scenic trail (the one we took to hide the cache) is the Saasveld starting point. From here you can hike up to Tierkop and take the single track from there, down the mountain towards the dam. The last stretch to the dam is a bit overgrown and requires a bit of bushwhacking. From the dam you can either turn back or carry on up the mountain on the other side and hike down to Pepsi Pools. From Pepsi Pools you can go back up to Saasveld. This is a 16.5 km hike and requires bit more fitness.
