The epilogue in Housman’s version of the Arabian Nights occurs after the story of Princess Badoura and Prince Camaralzaman.
“As Scherherazade concluded her story the light of dawn grew full. For a thousand and one nights she had given entertainment to her lord, saving at the same time the lives of her fellow-women. During this period she had borne the King three children… So she set them before the King, and said, “…thrice I have been a mother thou hast not yet pardoned me. Say therefore, O King, when is my death to be…?”
“At these words the King cried: “O Scheherazade, by Allah I swear to thee that before the coming of these children thou wast pardoned already…”
Joys of that news spread through the palace, and thence to the city and all the people…. “
And there was great rejoicing!
There is more to it, though, as Scheherazade is strong and independent, determined to be in charge of her destiny, even to the extent of saving her own and others’ lives in a seemingly male-oriented world. She has been described as the world’s first feminist..
Scholars remind us that such stories as these never end. Even the frame story surrounding the 1001 nights is framed again by the story of mankind itself… Housman places his epilogue nearer the beginning than the end!
But let’s not be too serious! It's almost time to relax!
