Geocache Description:

A rather unique structure in Greytown NZ

Spread out below you is the southern hemisphere's largest, "single structure", orchard cover. The netting which cost approx $2.5 to install currently covers 70 hectares and it is the owner of JR's Orchard, John van Vliet's, plan to eventually expand the cover to occupy 100 Ha. The original reason for installation of the net was to control the problems of damage from birds and since it's installation the production of apples and pears has increased by 20 - 30%. 

One of the intresting side effects of the installing of the netting is its effect on bees. Each spring bees are introduced for pollination of the crop. Early on it was found that the strange environment created by the netting cover caused confusion for the bees and they were not able to find their way back to their individual hives. This problem was solved by ingeniously colour coding the hives. Each hive has attached a different  marker each with its own unique combination of different colours and the bees seem to learn which colour combination marks their own hive.
