Beautiful view of Haleakalā's last eruption about 250 years ago.
He lua i Maui ua ena e Pele. (A pit burns on Maui, red hot by Pele. )
Over a million years ago, Pele, Ka Wahine o Ka Lua (the woman of the pit), continued the creation of Maui by digging a pit, a volcano, that rose to be Haleakalā, one of the volcanos that form Moloka'i, Lana'i and Maui. Standing here, you are in the midst of the last eruption caused by Pele in the 1700s.
The Floozie has traced Pele's steps and left a memorial at the base of a mound of 'a'ā. In this way, she has become Ka Floozie o Ka Lua in memory of this goddess. Pele now dwells on the island of Hawai'i, finishing her home there and building her new home of Lo'ihi. You can visit Lo'ihi when it breaks the surface of the sea in about 50,000 years. PARKING is about 350 feet away. Wear closed toe shoes; no flipflops.
