Back in the day when I was just a youngster I was a frequent visitor to this stretch of coastline. On suitable days I whiled away the hours catching spotties off the rocks while my father and uncle dived for Crays, Paua, Moki, Butterfish and Cod. Hawaiian sling, mask and snorkel and a sack tied to an inner tube were the hi-tech diving gear of the time.

Please take extra care while crossing Makara Stream at the beginning of the walk. Planning your visit to coincide with the tide will mean the difference between the water coming up to your knees, or being waist deep (depending on your stature of course). The terrain rating reflects the need to cross the stream the rest of the trek is about 2 to 2.5
