ASHERS (Southland) Traditional Cache
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
This cache entails a short ride into the country to a pleasant destination, with the possible luxury of a coffee if you are so lnclined.
The cache is a 200ml snaplock, so not much room for swaps, and is hidden near the old lignite coal pit at Ashers about 23 km.from Invercargill .Lignite was mined here from around 1904 to 1971 and there was a rail service running for most of that time carrying passengers and freight in the early days , but freight only latterly. The railway ran from Waimahaka to Invercargill and there was a siding at Ashers, but this is long gone. In recent years the unsightly lignite pit has been transformed by an envoronmental award winning project into a tranquil and scenic gardens and lake, with a population of geese, ducks and swans.
The cache is available 24/7 and you do not have to enter the property to find the cache, although if you are there when the gardens are open(I believe most days in summer)you may well be tempted to pay the small entry fee to have a leisurely wander about this pleasant spot. There remains a large untapped lignite field in the Ashers/Waimatua area and discussion continues as to if and how this resource could be utilised. If you are touring in a motorhome or caravan an overnight stop is an option. It is on the main Catlins to Invercargill route.
