Geocache Description:

Krung Kasem Canal Walk ListKrung Kasem Canal Walk

Telephone central

Another one in your wonder up the canal. This time it is TOT (Telephone Organization of Thailand) that you are near. A giant in Thailand who has allowed us, with difficulties at time, to communicate with this modern apparatus called the telephone.

Back in the 60's (as far back as I can rememnber) telephones were rare items. It cost a fair ammount to secure one (I have paid 20,000 Baht in 1980, for a phoneline.) as they were so rare. Bangkok was a city of millions with but a few hundred thousand numbers so there was required a little greasing of the lines with money to get one.

To place a long distance call one would call the opperator and book the call. Hang up and wait. One never really knew when the call would go through. But hopefully with in 24 hours the phone would ring and it would be the operator stating that they had managed to connect and I would get to speak to grandma. Being that there was a a lot of distance the echo was really bad. One would hear one's self so there were a lot of aquward pauses.

For I as a budding internet user this was really bad as the cost to connect back to a server in the US was very expensive the line noise was high and chance of being disconected was also high. In Bangkok we had a few BBS's to connect to.

In the 90's a company came onto the market and offered millions of lines. Telecom Asia which then became True. We went from the land of difficult communications to one of modern ease. We got our connections to the Internet and mobile phones arrived with a vengance. I think due to the lack of lines pre TelecomAsia the kingdom took to mobile communications and everyone has a mobile now and geocaching for me at least is so easy.
