Silverdale Saunter is a circular walk that takes you to a series of 6 geocaches. You can start the walk from the Millenium clock in the village centre. The walk is 3.7 miles long and takes you to some beautiful spots and through fields, woodland and coastal sites with some great views on the way. We'll tell you some local history as you go.
. The cache is by a chimney restored by the AONB Limestone Heritage Project and nearby you will see a stone Jetty and the remains of a bridge. The bridge was to allow grazing sheep free access across the stream. The quay and chimney date back to the1790’s and the Napoleonic Wars when the copper price, to make bronze for cannon, was high. Copper ore was mined and brought in here from Crag Foot and Heald Brow nearby. The chimney represents the last remaining structure that was used to smelt the copper. The copper was shipped from the quay. When prices fell the smelting stopped.
