It is immediate and it is intense. It is the bond that is sparked by the words "Meet your new daughter." Though sleeplessness may make it difficult to account for the number of bottles you've prepared, how many late night floors you've walked or how many verses of "You Are My Sunshine" you've sung, you are sure of one thing, you love this tiny baby beyond measure, You are her protector and her provider.
From her first tottering steps to walks through the park life has become an exciting journey of fun and discovery. You now have a shadow as you move through the day planting the flowers, working on the house, or whatever else comes your way. "Why?" has become a very familiar word and there seems to be no limit to its use. You may not have all the answers but you are sure that if there is one truth in the universe it is that you love this little girl. You are her playmate and her teacher.
As she grows her life becomes more complex. It seems each day brings her more challenges and new experiences. Together you face the changes. By providing a safe harbor to which she can return you give her the courage to explore. You are there to share the joy when life goes her way and to mop up the broken hearts wh,en it does not. That is what love does. You are her friend and confidant.
Then the time comes, as it should, when she takes all the wisdom, experience and love you have poured into her and begins to build a life of her own. Although in some private moments you would give anything for her to be four once more and to do it all over again, you are none the less proud of the person she has become. But while life may change your bond does not. You will always be her protector, her first love, her daddy and she will always be your girl.
So my friend no matter the milestone you find yourself near along this path I wish you my best, and remember, we are blessed.
