Across the road is Pontefract Barracks which were built on Wakefield Road, Pontefract, in c1879 by the then War Office, on one of the highest points in Pontefract. The barracks were once the depot of the York and Lancaster Regiment and later the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry depot. The barracks closed in 1963 and are now a business centre.
