The Cañon City area of eastern Fremont County is home to 46 mountain summits and peaks ranging between 5,469 and 9,560 feet. However, one is located on Fort Carson (Wild Mountain) and the other is located on the East Cañon Correctional Complex (Castle Rock) and are not accessible to the general public.
South Twin Mountain is a 7,901 foot mountain peak located approximately eight miles northwest of Cañon City, Colorado. It is alongside U.S. Highway 50 on what is known locally as “Eight Mile Hill.” The summit can be recognized by two radio towers located on public Bureau of Land Management land.
It ranks as the 2,872nd highest mountain in Colorado and the 9,371st highest mountain in the United States.
The summit can be accessed by vehicle by a road servicing the radio towers heading north from the intersection of U.S. Highway 50 and County Road 3A and one could literally drive right to it, but that road is restricted as private and is gated. It is, however, accessible by foot utilizing public land, so one should consult a map prior to attempting.
