A little specialised location in Greytown NZ
As small boys we often peered wistfully through toy shop windows at shiny new toy soldiers. As with generations before these toys represented an imaginary world of battles won or lost on exotic and far off shores. Now in Greytown New Zealand is a thriving family run industry producing exquisite handpainted toy soldiers which are exported world wide.
This shop opened in 1992 the first models being former New Zealand Military Units including; The Eketahuna Mounted Rifles, The Wellington Amazon Volunteers and a set of Dunedin Highlanders.
One of the reasons fo it's continuing success has been the careful research undertaken to ensure that each piece is authentic. The owners delve into old books, posters, paintings and rifle through military records and files in search if information. Once research is done prototypes are made. Next comes the casting process, where rubber molds are placed in a casting machine and filled with hot metal. After the casting is removed, it's a matter of cleaning up the odd burr befor priming the bare metal
After several months training the painters are able to firstly paint the uniform, then the pack, and finally detailed buttons, regalia and facial features the give a "persona" to the final creation.
The cache is a 400 ml screw top. Please use stealth and replace the cache carefully.
