Geocache Description:

A woodland walk to a secluded area with vacant croft and outbuildings. Ideal area to take the dog for a walk.

Detached traditional stone built property for sale. Suitable for family who love the outdoors. Contemporary open plan design, suitable for modern minimalist furnishing. Uninterrupted views from all upstairs rooms. Highly efficient ventilation system, guaranteed no condensation on any windows. Large open fireplace downstairs. Large garden and outhouses.

At the beginning, some of the obvious track is badly cut up by mountain bikes and horses, but once into the woods proper there are multiple options and generally keeping (right) towards the stream and gorge provides better paths and prettier views. Do not be tempted to take the direct route across the valley between the two sets of buildings through the inpenetrable gorse forest, it would stop a tank division, but instead head SW from Jenny's Bog, once home of the superb 'The Swanley Trails' (GC26245), now archived, to the conifers (N56° 58.453, W2° 18.785) where you will find a track which heads NW to Burn ofDay, providing a useful bridge over the burn. Total walking distance just over 1 mile each way. The longer route is 1.7miles each way. Alternative routes exist through the forest for the more adventurous. Forestry operations may interfere with access and no motor vehicles are allowed into the forest.

Cache is a camouflaged lock and lock, the area is very quiet so searching should be uninterupted. The GZ is out in the open so GPS signal should be strong. Please make sure you return the cache in a position where it is not too visible and also won't get crushed or damaged. Tracks can be very muddy in wet weather and the descent into the valley between the two cottages is a bit steep so good waterproof boots are recommended. Active children should be able to reach the cache and enjoy searching.
Many thanks to The Forestry Commission for permission to place the cache. In 1863 the property was described as "A small farm house in middling repair with outhouses attached (the property of R. W. Duff Esqr.)"

.. Anyone now visiting this cache location may be confused because the old ruined house and outbuildings have been demolished and any evidence of their existence removed. I thought twice about archiving the cache because the reason for it being there has gone, but I reasoned that the walk is still the same as it was, just the cache isn’t at an obvious visiting place anymore. The cache was not affected by the demolition. .
