A very short hike to this one though it can be done in conjunction with lots of other nearby caches, including the challenge caches on the Cadgers Road
A nice short hike to this one and for very minimal effort here you get to enjoy some of the best views County Louth has to offer.
This cache is near the summit of Annaverna and is the second peak in the mountain range. The first is Clermont Cairn (or Black Mountain as it is know locally) You will be parking at the summit of Black Mountain (parking area beside the entrance to the mast) Please note that no mechanical vehices of any kind are allowed past this parking point and dogs are completely banned from all parts of the Cooley Mountains.
Annaverna is the highest point of the annual Poc Fada. The Poc Fada is an annual competition which takes place in this part of the mountains. It pays hommage to a feat attributed to legendary local hero Cúchulainn. It is said Cúchulainn while bored one day hit his sliotar across the Cooley Mountains in one hit. Hurlers come from all over the country to compete in the Poc Fada where the aim is to follow a course around Annaverna where the winner is the one who makes it round in the fewest hits.
As with all caches placed in mountainous areas it is essential you come prepared for mountain conditions, appropriate clothing, boots, food, water, etc
