Historic Durham: Tinkler's Lane Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Dalesman: This cache has been in need of care and maintenance for some time and as the owner has not responded to recent logs or logged into geocaching.com for some time I am archiving it.

Guidelines: "You are responsible for occasional visits to your cache to maintain proper working order, especially when someone reports a problem with the cache (missing, damaged, wet, etc.). You may temporarily disable your cache to let others know not to search for it until you have a chance to fix the problem. This feature is to allow you a reasonable amount of time - normally a few weeks - in which to check on your cache. If a cache is not being maintained, or has been temporarily disabled for an unreasonable length of time, we may archive the listing."

If you wish to email me please send your email via my profile (click on my name) and quote the cache name and number.

Many thanks,

Geocache Description:

A small cache, you'll need a pen to sign the log.

Clayport Gate, located nearby until 1791 was the only way in and out of Durham itself on land, the rest being surrounded by the River Wear.  Part of the ancient city wall it was described as being "a good size with a chamber above it".

Many moons ago there was a leaden cross which was the marker to seperate the boundary between the parish of St Giles and the parish of St Nicholas, now Tinkler's Lane is the official boundary between these two parishes.  Tinkler's Lane marks the beginning of Gilesgate (St Giles Gate after the nearby church) and the end of Durham City.   Claypath (or Clay Peth...Clay Hill) would have been thronged with pilgrims, travelling traders, merchants and the like entering and leaving the city, now thanks to the addition of the bypass it is the quietest it has been for centuries.

Before the bypass, Tinkler's Lane was a vennel which led all the way down to the river at Bath's Bridge.
