Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
This is an Earth Cache, so there is no container to be found. There is only an Earth Science lesson. To log a find on this cache you are required to read the description, hike down to the falls and answer a couple of questions in an email.
Please exercise caution when accessing this Earthcache. The hike to the falls should only be undertaken by those comfortable hiking on a steep grade with very loose footing.
This earthcache is located at the site of Corner Brook Stream Falls on the West side of Corner Brook. To access this site, parking is available at the corner of Confederation Drive and Crockers Road. Take the eastern side gravel path, leading south.
Formation of a waterfall
Typically, a river flows over a large step in the rocks that may have been formed by a fault line. As it increases its velocity at the edge of the waterfall, it plucks material from the riverbed. This causes the waterfall to carve deeper into the bed and to recede upstream. Often over time, the waterfall will recede back to form a canyon or gorge downstream as it recedes upstream, and it will carve deeper into the ridge above it.
Often, the rock stratum just below the more resistant shelf will be of a softer type, which is evident at this site. The cliffs that surround you on each side of the gorge are sedimentary rocks that have been gradually eroded by the Corner Brook Stream. If you look at the rocks behind and beside the waterfall you will see that the rock type changes to Igneous rock which is much harder and has slowed the erosion caused by the stream
To log this cache, please answer the following questions in an e-mail to me:
1. Approximately how high are the cliffs of sedimentary rock surrounding the gorge?
2. How does the width of the stream downstream of the falls compare to the width of the falls itself?
Please feel free to post a photo at the Earthcache site to let others know what they have to look forward to at this site
