The Indian mound is located in a roadside park, between the north and south bound lanes of US Highway 49, at Pocahontas, MS. There is a parking area located at the visitors center on the south side of the park. Concrete and gravel walking trails lead to the geocache. To save time, take the left concrete path north from the visitor's center and where the trail forks, north of the mound, bear right.
Before the park and walking path were constructed, the original cache was located in what was a thicket of trees and vines to the northwest of the mound and is now a grassy area just off the side of the walking trail. On the way to the cache, look at N32°28.206' W090°17.323 to see the original cache site. The present location is the fifth in it's long history.
Take your camera; you'll want to take pictures of this very historic site.
Inside the container is a logbook. Please add any geo-goodies and trackables you may have.
Be careful! This is a wild area and be aware that snakes and other critters could be hiding in the grass and logs. Poke around with a stick before picking up the cache. Also, it could be muddy after a rain. Signs indicate the gravel trail in not wheelchair accessible.
Please sign the log: We've replaced the logbook many times. The new one is the sixth. Good caching everyone
3/2/2003 - Pusherofpixels and Billyb "pulled maintenance" on the cache, sorting through and generally straighting up inside, dropping in a new camera, and drying out the bag. If the pictures from the old disposable camera come out, we'll post them here.
3/21/2004 - Pusherofpixels, Scoony, Tombob, and I again "pulled maintenance" on the cache, getting it ready for another year of service. We dried it out in the nice sunshine and wind and replaced the old, tattered trash bag. The first logbook was filled so we put another in the container. We picked up the disposable camera; watch for more pictures.
4/10/2005 - Pocahontas has now been returned to the cache site.
8/21/2006 - Marked Happy Texan Travel bug missing. It hasn't been in the cache in a long time.
3/15/2008 - Put new geogoodies in the original container along with a new log book.
11/20/2011 - Relocated Pocahontas to a new location on the north side of the park, along the gravel walking path. The location is accessible from the parking lot and cachers should not have any problem with security or water. Added new geogoodies and started new log, #4 in preparation for Pocahontas starting its 10th year.
9/9/2015 - After several log entries indicating difficulty locating the cache, Pusherofpixels and I went out to investigate. Found the cache had moved somewhat, probably due to cachers moving it to better hiding locations because of landscaping and brush clearing operations. Relocated Pocahontas cache to a new hiding place about 60 feet north. The coordinates have been changed accordingly. Cleaned-up inside the cache and added new pens in preparation for Pocahontas cache starting its 14th year.
9/15/2016 - Investigated reports of not found and discovered that the cache was missing. This is the fourth time, by my best recollection, in this cache's long history, that it has been lost, removed, or washed away. A new container, with log, but only a couple of geogoodies, has been placed in the same location and hidden in the same way.
3/20/2020 - Only 4 days before the 18th anniversary of the cache, we investigated reports of not found and discovered that the cache had been moved and left open to the elements. This is the fifth time in this cache's long history, that it has been lost. A new ammo can container, with a new log, has been placed in a slightly different location.
12/1/2020 - Checked location and condition of cache. The cache in is good condition and location is accurate. The cache is well hidden, but will be obvious to geocachers. Please re-hide similarly after finding it. Thank you all for another good year.
Good caching everyone. BillyB
