Near to here and very early on 8th January 1943, Flight Lieutenant Richard Hope Hillary and Sergeant Kenneth Wilfrid Young Fison were killed when their Blenheim V crashed at Crunklaw.
Near to the site of RAF Charterhall, this memorial was erected by members of Trinity College (where Richard studied- Kenneth went to Cambridge), the name comes from the title of the autibiographical book written by Richard Hillary about his experiences after being shot down and badly burnt in 1940, before returning to flying duties in 1942. The two men had flown together for less than two weeks.
The last enemy that shall be destroyed is Death. 1 Corinthians XV 26.
