Geocache Description:

This junction was the start of the old by-pass, built in the 1930s, which first diverted the A5 London to Holyhead road around the centre of the town of Shrewsbury. Subsequently in the 1980s the by-pass that we know today was constructed even further out of the town.

When the original Shrewsbury by-pass was created, a large pub named The Oak was buillt on the triamgular piece of land created between the two roads - the old road and the new. Unfortunately it was destroyed by fire in the 1980s and after standing derelict for some time it was removed and the land used to build houses.

The sculpture now standing here commemorates both The Oak and Thomas Telford, the engineer who designed the original London - Holyhead road which went through the middle of Shrewsbury.

The Oak was a large brick built typical 1930s style building with a large car park, intended as much to attract passing trade as local residents. I have vivid memories of standing outside for 3 hours one evening in my student days, trying to "thumb" a lift back to college in Leicester.
